Gilgandra's favourite authors are?

Gilgandra Library has begun a search for Gilgandra's favourite authors. We have begun a new blog, Gilgandra Library Book Chat (gilgandralibrarybookchat.blogspot.com).

We are asking people to tell us the names of their favourite authors, either by dropping a note in the Box at the Library (see photo below) or by commenting on the new blog. We hope to compile a nice, fat list of authors by December 2008, and publish it in our local paper. You never know: we might all discover some new authors to try!

Gilgandra Library "Dream Library" competition results

During the school holidays, the Library held a competition called “Draw your dream library”. We received 16 entries, from children aged from 5 to 13. There were some beautiful drawings and some fantastic ideas. Several children drew an outside view of their dream library. Most were imposing buildings, with multiple stories and interesting windows. We especially loved the pretty library decorated with hearts and flowers, and the beautiful library which consisted of three towers with a large diamond on the roof of each of the towers. There was also a wonderful rocket ship library.

Other children drew floor plans for the interior of their dream library. There were some interesting new ideas, such as an open plan room containing all the usual shelves and books, with a wide set of stairs leading up to a smaller second storey which was entirely devoted to quiet space. Another child drew a library with lots of books, a café, a play room and a room devoted to electronic games. Another child drew a library with a separate enclosed sound proof movie room and another space for babies to sleep. In most of the entries, the children drew a separate clearly defined room for kids, and most included a play area. One great idea was to have an outdoor play area attached to the library, with swings.

Most of the children included more computers in their dream library, and several had separate computer rooms. One had a quiet room where older people could sit and relax near the front of the library, and a noisy children’s play room at the back. The teenagers section featured a bean bag corner and lots of shelves of books.

There were six prizes for the “dream libraries” which showed the most new ideas. It was very difficult to choose the winning entries, because each of the drawings included lots of fresh ideas. First prize was won by Jael, and the five runners up were: Shea, Sophie, Joshua, Wesley and Amber. The other entries were so beautiful that we decided to give each of the other entrants a small gift, too. We would like to thank the children for their lovely drawings, which will be displayed at the Library.

Gilgandra Shire Library Survey

What do Gilgandra residents want from their Shire Library? We are part way to finding the answer to this question with the completion of the telephone survey conducted by Taverner Research. Jenny Burke from Taverner Research presented the results of the telephone survey to Gilgandra Shire Council last Tuesday 9 September.

402 people answered the telephone questionnaire, half of them users of the Library and half non-users. One in five library users believed there needed to be a bigger library or an extension to the Library. One in ten library users would like to see a better collection of books and other items in the Library. The other improvement that people would like is to have a space for quiet study and a space for meetings. When people were asked what things they would see as important in planning their ideal library, they wanted mainly more books and other library materials, and more computers and internet access.

Overall satisfaction with the services and collections of the Library was high, with all users being satisfied with the service they receive at the Library. The Library would like to thank all the people who took the time to answer these questions. Their help has given us a very good base on which to build the Library’s plans for the future.

Taverner Research also conducted two focus groups in the Library last Tuesday. The report on the findings of these focus groups should be received by the end of the month. The focus groups aimed to explore in greater depth some of the ideas that came out of the telephone survey. The whole survey project, including the phone survey and the focus groups, was funded by a NSW Library Development Grant.
